In the years that followed, he developed addictions to methamphetamines and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise. Now in his twenties, Sheff is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic and author of two memoirs, Tweak and We All Fall Down, about his experience. He plunges into the mental and physical depths of drug addiction, painting a picture of a person at odds with his past, with his family, with his substances, and with himself. It’s a frightening portrait—but not one without hope. In an extraordinary turn of events his father, David Sheff, simultaneously wrote his own memoir about their experience, A Beautiful Boy. About David Sheff David Sheff is the author of Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey through His Son’s Addiction and Clean: 12 New Steps to Overcoming Addiction. Beautiful Boy is an award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller that recounts Sheff’s harrowing struggle to help his son Nic overcome his methamphetamine addiction. Based on the latest research in psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, Clean’s myth-shattering premise is that drug use is preventable and addiction is a preventable, treatable disease. Sheff rejects the stigmatization of drug use and calls for a new approach that treats use and addiction for what it is: a health crisis that is costing America $600 billion a year (in healthcare costs, crime and lost productivity) and killing 320 people a day—more than any disease other than cancer and heart disease. About First Call (www.firstcallkc.org) First Call, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence founded in 1958, is a key catalyst for building capacity among over 200 Greater Kansas City area substance abuse, health care, behavioral health and supportive service providers.
