The logo shouldn't be focused on one specific industry (like metals, etc.). The idea it should depict should be: you're a member of a user group. As such, you can somehow influence the development of our solution and increase the efficiency of it / benefits it brings to your business.
We don't have any iconographic design so far, just a logo of the company. However, we do have one other graphical element we use (and which is related to this user group). It is a card-like graphic, attached. However, I'm not sure whether the user group logo should be familiar to this or not. If you would like to try to make it familiar, one thing that comes to mind is that the logo could be hexagonical (notice the semi-transparent hexagons in the logo). But as I say, I'm not sure whether to use this or not.
I would like to avoid letters in the logo, the graphics it should contain something more like a icon/symbol depicting what is described in the first paragraph.
Better think this through... I would like the logo to have some relation to the fact that the users can get together and influence the development of our solutions.
If we find somebody who would design an icon we really like, we will have several more, similar tasks in the future.
The logo should give the impression of stability, reliability, knowledge/know-how
